Race Matters: Cultural Politics in the 1960s

This webinar series presents the work of a range of Bearden’s contemporaries which provides greater insight regarding the cultural and racial milieu. These fellow artists, who came from diverse racial backgrounds, likewise felt the call to respond to the tenor of the times and tackle Black subject matter and/or racial themes in their work. The series will expand our understanding of how racial concerns were articulated during this watershed decade.

A conversation dedicated to the lesser-studied sphere of Romare Bearden’s art making: his public art. In his later career, he translated his iconic collage making practice into larger-than-life ceramic, mosaic and painted murals displayed in salient communal spaces around New York, Charlotte, Baltimore and more. Oftentimes, these works served as an initial meeting ground, introducing Bearden to the general public.
