On December 12, 1903, Jean-Pierre Hoschedé (who became Claude Monet’s step-son when Monet wedded his mother Alice Hoschedé in 1892) married Suzanne Costadau at Monet’s home in Giverny. The host seemed to have left nothing up to chance for the wedding reception. This postcard, with a “Monsieur Claude Monet” header, shows again how much the artist enjoyed gastronomy and the infamous care with which he honored his relatives and guests. This menu, which documents a succession of gourmet dishes, speaks to the importance of the event to be celebrated.
The menu reads:
Hors d’œuvres
Turbot with Hollandaise sauce
Gigot chevreuil (deer leg)
Turkey with chestnuts
Paté de foie gras
Green salad (lettuce)
Ice cream: Nelusko Alhambra
