New Archival Release: Michel and Irma van Gelder Papers

The WPI recently released new materials from the Michel and Irma van Gelder Papers (1898–1971). The Dutch collectors and dealers assembled an important collection of Old Master paintings, exemplified by these five albums containing black and white photographs of paintings in the possession of Michel van Gelder.

This significant addition provides reproductions of paintings that might not have been identified in Tableaux [Paintings register], such as paintings attributed to Brekelenke or de Hooch, or whose reproduction might not have been previously included in the archive. Portrait d’un Chevalier, for example, was attributed in the Album to Velasquez and Juan Carreño de Miranda in Tableaux. The dates printed by the photography studio on some of the photographs also provide valuable information on the history of the collection.
