Join us for “Florine Stettheimer and Georgia O’Keeffe: Alternative Modernists,” part of the Preserving Legacies series from the Wildenstein Plattner Institute and NYU Steinhardt Visual Arts Administration Program, with Barbara Bloemink (lead scholar of the forthcoming Florine Stettheimer Catalogue Raisonné Project) and Barbara Buhler Lynes (Georgia O’Keeffe: Catalogue Raisonné) in a conversation moderated by renowned journalist Julia Halperin.
Florine Stettheimer and Georgia O’Keeffe are prominent American women modern artists. As friends, they exhibited widely in galleries and museums — and were highly admired by curators and art critics during the first half of the 20th century. Their approaches to artmaking, however, are remarkably different. Bloemink and Lynes will discuss the artists’ relationship, how they controlled their public image, how their work differs and yet reveals a mutual interest in simultaneity, and more. This event will also call attention to published and forthcoming catalogues raisonnés that document all known works by Stettheimer and O’Keeffe.
Julia Halperin is an arts and culture journalist, editor, and co-founder of the Burns Halperin Report, the largest report of its kind tracking equity and representation in the art world. She is a contributor to the New York Times, the Financial Times, and W magazine, among other publications. She also serves as editor at large of CULTURED magazine and a contributing editor to The Art Newspaper, where she writes a column about changes and challenges in American art museums. From 2017 to 2022, she was executive editor of Artnet News.
Barbara J. Bloemink is the international expert on the work of the modernist artist Florine Stettheimer. She is the author of the Florine Stettheimer Catalogue Raisonné which will be published by the Wildenstein-Plattner Institute in 2007. Her Florine Stettheimer: A Biography (Hirmer/Univ. of Chicago Press) was chosen by The New Yorker as “One of the best books of 2021.” In 1995, her Ph.D. dissertation on the artist was published by Yale University Press; that year she co-organized the first full retrospective of Stettheimer’s work at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Bloemink is the author of over 20 books on international modern and contemporary art and design.
Bloemink served as the Curatorial Director of the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum in New York, the Managing Director of the Guggenheim & Guggenheim Hermitage Museums in Las Vegas, the Director and Chief Curator of the Contemporary Art Center of Virginia, the originating Director and Chief Curator of The Kemper Museum of Art and Design, and the Director and Chief Curator of the Hudson River Museum in New York.
Dr. Bloemink has organized over 70 international exhibitions of modern and 20th-century contemporary art and design. She has lectured and has lectured and taught at universities all over the world. She holds a Ph.D. from Yale University and two M.A. degrees in art history. Bloemink received her B.A. from Stanford University.
Barbara Buhler Lynes, Ph.D. is the leading expert on Georgia O’Keeffe. She authored the award-winning Georgia O’Keeffe: Catalogue Raisonné (Yale University Press,1999) and numerous other books and essays about the artist and her contemporaries. Her new book on O’Keeffe is coming out spring 2027 with University of New Mexico Press: My Life with Georgia O’Keeffe.
Lynes is the founding curator of the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum as well as the Founding Emily Fisher Landau Director of the museum’s Research Center (1999–2014). She was the Sunny Kaufman Senior Curator at the Fort Lauderdale Art Museum from 2014–2014, leaving to pursue her scholarly work on O’Keeffe full-time. She has organized numerous exhibitions on O’Keeffe, American and European art, and lectures widely in America and Europe. She is an honorary member of the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum’s Board of Trustees.
Lynes holds a doctorate in Art History and another in French Literature. She taught art history at Vanderbilt University, Dartmouth College, and Maryland Institute College of Art (1980-92).
